Overview

Automatic transfer switches: an overview

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) watches the utility power coming into your home. When it senses an outage, it signals the generator to start and, once the generator is ready, moves your circuits from the utility to the generator. When the grid is stable again, it switches back and lets the generator cool down and shut off.

Because the transfer switch sits between the utility, the generator and your home’s wiring, it has to be installed correctly. It also prevents generator power from feeding back onto utility lines, which protects line workers. This is licensed electrical work, and Kelm performs it under electrical contractor license TECL #21849.

Switches come in different forms: whole-home service-rated switches, switches that serve a sub-panel of essential circuits, and switches with load-management modules that shed large loads when needed. We match the switch to your generator, your panel and your coverage goal.

FAQ

Transfer Switches FAQ

Common questions about this service.

Can I use a manual transfer switch instead?

Manual switches are common with portable generators. A standby generator is normally paired with an automatic switch so it works without you being home.

Does the switch need maintenance?

It should be inspected as part of regular generator maintenance, including a test under load.

Can you service a switch someone else installed?

Yes. We can inspect and service existing Generac and Kohler systems; call to describe your equipment.

What happens if the switch was flooded?

Don’t operate the system. Have it inspected before it’s energized again.
